Music and Rituals
Every aspect of our lives is connected to music. From the music we listen to in the car to the music played on some of the most important days of our lives. Music gives us a feeling whether happy, sad, sentimental, or exciting. We have certain songs we associate with people or events in our lives. I’m going to share some events in my life and the music that was present.
Weddings:
I’ve been to a few weddings and the music at each one is different. Usually, the music at a wedding is picked by the couple and reflects their relationship and lives. The music is all happy and some is played for dancing. The music is sometimes performed live by a band or singer or played by a DJ or something similar. The most recent wedding I went to was my cousins. He and his wife had their first dance to “Stand by Me.” I really love this song and the moment was very sweet.
"Stand By Me" Ben E. King
Funerals:
Music at a funeral represents a person’s life. The songs may be chosen by a person or their families. Songs at a funeral are somber, they may be sung or played on an instrument. The songs played at funerals probably have a story behind them. The songs could be from someones favorite band, film, or artist. This song was my grandpa’s favorite hymn. The pianist at our church played it so beautifully.
"Sweet Beulah Land"
Graduation:
Songs played at graduation are probably “Pomp and Circumstance” and your schools Alma Mater. They are probably performed by the band or orchestra and sung by a singer or a choir. Songs at graduation represent the school and the class. They are reminiscent of time together and look forward to the future. My high school made a senior video that showed memories of our class. The song, “I Lived” was used in the video. I think “I Lived” is used often for graduations. Whenever I hear the song, I think about my class and when we all watched the video together.
"I Lived" One Republic
I LOVE that you included graduation as a ritual in yours! I never even thought of that, the only thing I thought of for rituals was church worship lol. I LOVE "Stand By Me"; it's probably one of my favorite songs ever. I also thought your intro was really good and helped me get a good idea for what your blog was going to be about. I also love OneRepublic, especially "I Lived"; definitely one of my favorite songs by them. The hymn your grandpa loved was so beautiful, I could listen to it for hours.
ReplyDeleteI love your choice of music!! "Stand by Me" by Ben E. King is a timeless classic. It's one of my personal favorites. This was a great pick! Your introduction perfectly captures what your blog is going to be about. I love that you included these rituals and the songs are great choices!
ReplyDeleteAnsley, I loved how you made the connection of music to every aspect of our lives and how music can impact the way we feel. I also like how you included graduation in your rituals. When I was writing my blog on the music and rituals in my life, I personally did not think of graduation as being a ritual. However, now I can see how graduation and the music played at a graduation can differ from culture to culture. During my graduation, we also sung the alma mater and had the traditional graduation march song played when the graduates entered and exited. I really enjoy reading your blog!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your blog and listening to the music you shared. I especially liked that you included graduation, as it is a little outside of the scope of what people may first think of when it comes to rituals. I love that your school used "I lived" for graduation, as it is such a perfect song for the occasion.
ReplyDeleteI liked reading your blog and I liked how you included music to show what you were talking about. I also wrote about funerals and weddings which included music rituals. The way you connected important events to music is a good point. The point you made that songs have meaning like when you said the graduation songs' meaning is to show reminiscence of a time together, was one I hadn’t thought about and found interesting.
ReplyDeleteLove this post! I never thought about funerals and weddings that included music rituals. My high school graduation also had a slideshow presentation with that song as the background music. It was very bittersweet!
